Leon Trotsky
Not only in peasant homes, but also in city skyscrapers, there lives along side the twentieth century the thirteenth. A hundred million people use electricity and still believe in the magic powers of signs and exorcisms…Movie stars go to mediums. Aviators who pilot miraculous mechanisms created by man’s genius wear amulets on their sweaters. What inexhaustible reserves they possess of darkness, ignorance and savagery.

Six trends and components of our species’ retreat from violence. Excerpts from ’ The better angels of our nature- the decline of violence in history and its causes ‘.

Trend 1:

• The pacification process: A transition from the anarchy of the hunting, gathering, and horticultural societies to the first agricultural civilizations with cities and governments, beginning around 5,000 years ago. This resulted with a retreat from life as a state of nature, including a fivefold decrease in rates of violent death.

Trend 2:

• The civilizing process: Between the late middle ages and the 20th century, European countries saw a tenfold to fiftyfold decline in their rates of homicide. This is attributed to the consolidation of a patchwork of feudal territories into large kingdoms with centralized authority and an infrastructure of commerce.

Trend 3:

• The humanitarian revolution: The age of reason and European enlightenment in the 17th and 18th centuries saw the first organized movements to abolish socially sanctioned forms of violence such as despotism, slavery, dueling, judicial torture, superstitious killing, sadist punishment and cruelty to animals.

Trend 4:

• The long peace: Post-world war 2, the development of the great powers and their inclination to stop waging war on one another.

Trend 5:

• The new peace: since the end of the cold war in 1989, organized conflicts of all kinds- civil wars, genocides, repression by autocratic governments and terrorism have declined throughout the world.

Trend 6:

• The rights revolutions: Inaugurated by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, there has been a growing revulsion against aggression on smaller scales, including violence against ethnic minorities, women, children, homosexuals, and animals.

In Memoriam: Christopher Hitchens 1949-2011

It’s said that the candle that burns twice as bright, burns half as long, and this is certainly the case with one of my most treasured authors and teachers, Christopher Hitchens.

Mr Hitchens died today, some years after he announced his diagnosis with Cancer.

Fearless to the end, this most judicious, revered and astute man transformed the lives of many with his wit, intelligence, sincerity and commitment to the truth, no matter how unpopular his position with a majority.

Christopher’s work and contributions will be seen as an indication of our times when looked back upon by future members of our species.

I join a chorus of other voices in stating with pride, “that I was alive, when Christopher Hitchens was alive…”

Associations from the mind of a primate.

Human societies have been subjected to, and inflicted violence upon one another since that dawn of the species some 80,000 to 200,000 YBP.

One may be surprised to learn that the rate of violence and its statistical occurrence (the likelihood that a man will die at the hands of another man) has been in a steady decline- though not guaranteed to continue and subject to short term fluctuations.

Professor Pinker posits a most compelling argument, that I believe is essential and well worth the time of investigation.

“This is one beastly album, just like the title suggests it will rip and tear you apart with its brutality….Ride the crushing Leviathan….”

I was recently interviewed by Sarah Petchell, Editor-In-Chief of ‘No Heroes Magazine’ regarding my solo project, Leviathan Of The Sea.

The interview can currently be found on their front page http://www.noheroesmag.com/ where I discuss many dimensions of http://leviathanofthesea.com/ in detail.

Special thanks to Sarah for the most considered questions.

Leviathan Of The Sea is the new project of Matthew Leonard Rowe, and if you haven’t checked out the brilliant slab of metalcore that is the project’s debut EP, then I strongly suggest you head over to the website right now and download it … FOR FREE!

And while you’re waiting for it to download, you can read the quick interview we did with Matthew about what effectively is a solo project that is as epic in scope and concept as it is in sound.”

Via The Vine: ‘Perth metal guy Matthew Leonard Rowe (ex-Anime Fire) has released a free five-tracker under his Leviathan of the Sea moniker and it’s pretty damn epic. And what metal act doesn’t come with a good manifesto. Rowe claims that the release is “as much a solo musical endeavour as it is a provocative philosophical platform”, as well as “taking issue with the modern music industry, the lack of serious subject matter in heavy music (and the way it is typically produced) along with the rising attack on Science and Reason.” It also just sounds good.’

“Get used to hearing LEVIATHAN OF THE SEA’s name because this solo project going to be big….”

Review by Rick Daly

It is with great elation that I announce my debut solo record ‘Leviathan of the Sea’.

http://leviathanofthesea.com/

Being the product of over two years of writing, production and artistic collaboration, the project has been a most consuming- yet ultimately necessary progression in my musical career.

I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to those of you that have contributed to this project with your time, and services- in particularly Mr Tue Madsen, Mr Tim Burak and Mr Ben Pobjoy.

A national publicity campaign conducted by Death Proof PR commences next week, and I encourage all who feel compelled to write about or share Leviathan of the Sea, to do so at their free will.

Perth, Australia’s Leviathan Of The Sea has released its new, freely available self-titled EP via http://leviathanofthesea.com. Led by Matthew Leonard Rowe (formerly of Anime Fire), LOTS is as much a solo musical endeavour as it is a provocative philosophical platform. Taking issue with the modern music industry, the lack of serious subject matter in heavy music (and the way it is typically produced) along with the rising attack on Science and Reason, LOTS is nothing short of a brutal ‘push back’ against complacency.

Combining the down tuned heaviness of Roots-era Sepultura and the emotive, technical proficiency of New American Gospel-era Lamb of God, LOTS self-titled 5 song EP is hard hitting and uncompromising. Produced by Tue Madsen (The Haunted, Sick of it All, August Burns Red), the EP is a return to form with regards to recording. There’s no sound replacement, no beat locking, no programming- nothing done to change the sounds that were created live off of the floor.

Featuring audio samples by Carl Sagan and Christopher Hitchens, the EP is a thought provoking polemic. Commenting on the EP’s content, Matthew Leonard Rowe adds, “The motivations for the record are what is most important to me. Authors such as Christopher Hitchens, Carl Sagan, Michio Kaku and Noam Chomsky have had a profound affect on my life and manner of thinking. I sincerely believe that these voices of reason need to be heard, and their advice heeded if we wish to consider ourselves members of a tenable species and reach our potential as the poorly evolved mammalian primates that we are.”

Choosing to issue the EP for free (as both a stream and as a download), Rowe wishes to put LOTS in front of as many listeners as possible - to popularise the music and its messages adding, “LOTS is a small part of a push back against the forces that wish to stultify education, institute a bronze age version of morality, practice abject unjustified authority and install theocracy. Those who consider the enlightenment, Science and Reason as the pinnacles of human achievement, will hopefully find solace in an idea such as LOTS.”

Since Leviathan of the Sea is a solo project there are no future plans to tour. However, Rowe will be releasing new music for free every 18 months.

The Leviathan of the Sea EP as well as downloadable lyrics, album art, wallpapers and promotional imagery are available at http://leviathanofthesea.com. Matthew Leonard Rowe is available for interviews via info@leviathanofthesea.com and encourages websites to host and stream music from the EP.
